Opie vs Jim Retrospective

Alright last one. I’m gonna stop filling your eyes with nonsense about a dead radio show after this. You’re welcome.

So this is the first fight any of the boys have had on the air, and honestly compared to the other ones, it’s not that eventful of even that hateful. The fight itself is all over the place, and it started off the radio.

Opie kept picking on Jim on the radio to the point where people in his personal life thought Opie had a problem with him. Ok, fine, you’re on a comedy show. But then Opie asked Jimmy not to make fun of him over how he pronounces shit. This is ridiculous

So cue the argument…which starts about comedians waiting outside. To this day I seriously don’t understand how this point started or what the fuck it’s about. First of all, who the fuck is Sean Rhouse or whatever his faggy cracker name is? This is the only time i’ve heard of the guy and Jims treating him like royalty. Opie is sadly in the right here. If he said goodbye to the guy off air, that’s fine. You don’t need to say goodbye on air. Why? So the fans are reminded who’s in studio? They would fucking remember if he had a memorable act. You didn’t just suddenly forget when Louis CK or Patrice or Colin were in studio.

Like, how did it possibly go from Not being able to make fun of Opie to comedians waiting outside? I honestly think it’s a little Greggshells. Opie probably told Jimmy this to where Jimmy unloaded his own resentments (i.e. comedians waiting outside, porn girls), and when the mics went on THAT’S what they focused on instead of the personal shit.

I’m in no way an Opie apologist. He’s a faggot. And in this argument he’s definitely at his worst. He may not be sniffing or saying period all the time, but this is the classic “I DONT KNOW DICKHEAD CUZ I DIDNT KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON THAT DAY FUCKFACE” moment along with the weird ultra passive aggressiveness. I’m not a psychiatrist but the dude was definitely going through shit outside of work to be fucking acting like this over…comedians and word pronunciation.

Something I noticed about this fight is that even in 2005, Jim is a fucking weirdo creep with the porn girls. In this clip, Jim complains about Opie not wanting whores on the radio. Cut to 2015 during the DL Hughley argument, and Jims sticking point is that they can get DL Hughley in but not a transgender slut. What a worm. At least Opie knew these whores were worthless.

Opie pulls his classic move of throwing people under the bus. He has done this in every single argument.
1. The grape fight he turned it from a personal thing into a weird business “you don’t care about the show and management has problems” thing
2. In the Greggshells response, Opie claims Ant didn’t want Jimmy trying to pit the two against each other.
3. In Opie v Jim 2, Opie claims Ant was trying to say he was calling Jimmy a cunt throwing Ant under the bus.
4. In Opie v Jim 3, Opie acknowledges to DL Hughley that Jim had a problem with him. (Which is fair because he was being a sulking retard.)

And now in this first fight, the topic randomly changes from how Jim wants comedians in faster to how Jim is paranoid and unhappy with the show. This perspective is hilarious considering Opie complained about management up until HIS LAST DAY. That was literally his thing. To say Jim is negative and doesn’t appreciate the company is batshit insane.

Jim has the cringiest line here maybe. “Thats so sociopathic i don’t even know how to respond.” Wow Jim. Nice non-exaggerated phrasing.

And pretty much as soon as it starts it ends. by the time they have their next show relationships are mended. But this was obviously the first sign of cracks to the show. Immediately after this fight, Anthony called Jimmy to shit on Opie and reaffirm his feelings, basically leading to building resentment for the next 10 years that lead to a handful more arguments and the entire show collapsing.

Baby Boy Jimmy was upset that his literal who comic friend bombed on air.

But Opie's so obnoxious that even when he has a point, you can't root for him.

At one point, Jim bitches at Opie for not thanking Sean Rouse for coming in, his response:

Opie: "What does that prove to the listener?"

I love how Opie has to be lectured on basic human courtesy. He's a sociopath.

GTFOH, Opie is at work, this wasn't a family gathering. How the fuck do you fault him for explaining how work works to a whining asshole who really doesn't seem to get it?

I fault him for his complete lack of self-awareness and common decency. Jim said it was a dick move not to thank a guest for coming in (which it is), and Opie still thinks he's talking about how it comes across on the radio.

The show really did take a drastic change in tone when Jim Norton became 3rd mic, which is good for the longevity but wow is it ever different listening to the WNEW days compared to Sirius/XM
I used to listen on weekday afternoons on WNEW. The first half of the show was usually pretty funny, but then they'd get into a shock-jock hackery bullshit and it was always total cringe.

Sean Rouse was a very funny comic and Opie was a dick for making comics wait as a power trip. One time he was fawkin pissed that Louie wasn’t told to come in an hour later and he sat in the office for an hour. “Whhyyy can’t anyone just pick up the phone? What the fuuuuck?” -Jim Norton - Just let Louie come in whenever he shows up. I think Norton was right in this because Rouse drove like 3 hours to make it there by 7am just to sit around for two hours.

He was never that funny and he was sort of a bore on the show. Louie CK should have had permission to walk in and push norton out of his chair, make him get coffee or whatever.

I wholeheartedly agree with your second point but I really liked Sean’s standup. I don’t think I ever listened to him on O&A though. Opie really let the fame get to his head and thought he could treat people like complete shit. Gregg Hughes, the actor who played Opie would never do that though.

Can't say I wouldn't be a dick too if they gave me money to be a dick on the radio. But we're pretty much in agreement, I remember seeing Sean opening for someone like Whitney Cummings a long time ago and didn't care for him. I will say this though, since Jim was invested in having Sean on the show he really should have ramped him up in advance and helped him to be less of a bore on the show. He wasn't someone you'd interview so he needed a rundown of all the inside jokes and Jim should have tossed him a softball or 2 to get him onboard. Part of Opie's insecurity was that he knew people were using him to promote but didn't really like him. He'd try to put them on the spot to prove they were just whoring. If jim did his part, Sean could have fit in better.

Just to tag this, I feel like I remember 20 different people telling stories about how they shit themselves just to get the conversation going on that show. Norton could have done something stupid like that just to get things going. The only reason they gave norton a chance was because Dice told them stories about how he drank piss, seems stupid but Dice was a pro.
