Once we turned on them, that was it for me and o&a, I could never hear it the same way knowing what complete and utter piles of human garbage they were. That and dissecting every little irritating quirk didn’t help as far as enjoying the show.

I’ve gone back and listened to some classic stuff, and even that feels “dated” and old. It just doesn’t hold up for me.

Haven’t had the same issue with Ron & Fez though.

Overall from 2005 on, O&A were a better show but peak Ron and Fez is the best radio show of all time. It didn't last long though, because Fez went batshit, Dave got fired/quit and Earl quit. Still mind blowing to me that Ron and Fez let Dave walk over pennies, even with the daycare offer. He was carrying the show for many parts of 2007 and 2008 while Fez did nothing.

I used to think O&A was the funnier show even though I listened to both. Now Ron&Fez by a country mile as I can't stomach hearing any clips that feature Jim Norton. I think they are all a bunch of queens but I despise the worm. How I ever thought he was funny is beyond me.

I'm with you there. No matter how much of a dropoff Bennington is from R&F, it's still Ronnie B telling jokes. And if I listen to old R&F, it almost always holds up.

I actually could never get into R&F as much as I’d like. Fez rules and his love of classic florida wrestling is awesome. Turning old dusty Rhodes gimmicks into radio bits is genius.

O&A is full of garbage, and they honestly made each other worse at times. Opie would take phone calls in the middle of Anthony and Jimmy telling bad jokes to each other, and the caller would start speaking over it, then Opie would yell at the callers about how they stink. And you know he did it all on purpose. It makes me hate him for being such a fag. And Anthony can’t just keep quiet. He always has to quip like a faggot. Colin Quinn was a great guest though. The comedians made O&A better than anything, but Colin was better than all of them because he refused to participate in their faggy bits

Thanks to YouTube I’ve been able to hear a lot of great Ron & Fez bits. Started with Fez and the homeless shopping spree and haven’t looked back. I can’t remember which clip it was but Fez was mad about something (might have been the cake horn saga) and Fez yelled NOW YOU KNOW ME - and without missing a beat Ron cuts him off with “Yeah I know you, You’re Fez.” And it still makes me laugh

Both have major caveats, but short answer: Ron and Fez, always.

Now allow me to be brief:image_9247_m:

When Opie and Tranth had on Colin, Patrice, even Louie, the quality skyrocketed. Those two teenage girls, as I've said many times, were lazy cunts who would never prepare for a show. However, when the aforementioned or other Cellar Crew came on, you'd hear what the show could be with effort, and the answer was pretty damned good. It's the Jackie Effect at it's strongest, but it worked. Take the comedians away, and put on anything like the last year leading up to Anthony's firing, I would nearly punch my own brother by the time I finished listening. Just misery oozing from my headphones and into my brain. If I even hear Candy Crush being played on a phone, I get PTSD.

Ron and Fez is far more complex. It's not just you either get it or you don't, it's also an investment of time. And that time rewards you, with numerous inside jokes, recurring characters, and long term storytelling. As scary as that might sound to a new listener, I've oddly had better luck turning on people to Ron and Fez than I have any other radio show. Gosia got hooked from "The Drug Store Jokester" bit and will actually listen with me if I put it on the house system (which isn't often), and Kool at least laughed at "How Many Nine Year Olds Can You Beat Up?" Steve really never liked any of it, but he did laugh when Ron snapped at Earl at "The Fainting Goats Last Stand". But I tried Stern or O&A with those same people - barring Gosia liking Patrice, everyone else, it was utter disdain. I was embarrassed after trying and never did it again.

It's a capsule of time when radio still barely mattered, and you had one show that coasted on its controversies, and another that pushed boundaries and concepts of what a show could be. Does that make R&F perfect?

No. Crazy Fez gets tiresome in long listens. There's moments with Dave that make me want to kill myself. Earl had moments that killed any humour in the room. The female interns were never beneficial to the conversation or show - and don't even get me started on Ronnie's Pussy Pedestaling.

But despite those negatives, I've never been as entranced or amused by radio as I have Ron Bennington and Fez Whatley. I only wish I could have heard more of the show while it was happening.
