Those camps were created because a Japanese pilot crash landed in Hawaii, was found by a Japanese couple living there, and they instantly decided to fuck over the Americans and hide him until they could get him to safety.Takei’s people were literally raping and killing Chinese people by the 1000s, but he spent a couple months in an internment camp as a toddler for being the spawn if an enemy nation, so I guess this millionaire understands.
That knowledge that the Japanese could live and work and even be friends with Americans, but would still view themselves as Japanese first, and then would instantly and without hesitation turn on Americans even after the Pearl Harbor attack meant that the US had to view its Japanese citizens as a potential fifth column. Once you're at that point isolating them in internment camps to save everybody else's lives starts looking like a great idea; and the kamikaze suicide attacks didn't exactly change their minds.
You can argue about their treatment in the camps, and loss of property; but you can also argue about Japan's refusal to pay reparations for their actions during the war as well - it took them until 1994 to admit to the existence of "comfort women" (or "sex slaves") for starters. That's 50 years of eye-witness accounts from tens of thousands of people ignored; until someone dug up official documents from the Japanese government archives talking about taking sex slaves and setting up forced brothels in an attempt to stop Japanese soldiers raping the general population.
