It doesn't even need to be a weapon, though that's the most dramatic example. (You can disarm a shortblade MAYBE if you're much better than them).

Martial arts moves are very sport focused. They work when you're in a tournament environment and your opponent agrees to match your school of tactics and keep everything clean. If you're a tall, naturally stocky, or even a fat guy, all you have to do is let your heft to the work and their "I need to grab your leg at this precise angle or it won't work" shit is made moot. That, and mentality. The guy who wants to win more or is less afraid of pain and injury will give it his all, and his adrenaline will access that emergency strength that's normally incomprehensible.

Thinking a sport is anything more than that, a sport, is delusional. Very often Seagal-style wannabe tough guys, Norton alpha male cum guzzlers, or Rogan (both) want you to believe MMA or BJJ is something far more than it is to protect the idea the participants are ubermensch instead of the parlor tricksters or 60 IQ beatsticks they are.
