I do this with Israel. The answer is usually “They’re our only ally in the Middle East!” Then I ask why do we need allies in the Middle East? It then devolves into some type of nonsense about terrorism or other gay shit. I wish you luck, but people don’t like the idea we waste time and money on people who don’t give a flying fuck about us.
Anytime I hear "they're our only ally in the Middle East" (Not so. Turkey is a Nato member and Egypt is basically a junta that's an extension of the US military) or "they're the only country in the region that allows gay marriage" I always respond with an emphatic "so what?" Every single time I see the gears turn and no answers come out because they can't rationalize how any of that affects them.
I did this in real life with the difference being the guy said, "They're the only democracy in the Middle East." My response was the same as yours. But the guy wasn't phased. For some reason, having a democracy in the Middle East is super duper important, especially while we have Jan 6ers in prison here.
I remember watching this video of this dweeb kvetching about seasteaders and how it's not right that people can willingly join a neo-cameralist or anarcho-capitalist society and how they absolutely must become a democracy. Democracy is this end all be all goal for a lot of normies.
I used to think that way when I was in middle school and high school. Funny enough the first time I remember questioning whether or not democracies really are that great was thanks to Jesse Ventura's legendary appearance on the show. Jesse said the best form of government was a highly competent benevolent dictator because he could be trusted to not abuse the people and could cut all the bullshit out and handle everything himself. And when you think about it democracies fucking suck, they're subject to the whims of emotional idiots too often. Mitt Romney would have won the 2012 election if not for enough dumb women believing the spin that he hated women. Shit the last two elections the Democrats' entire platform was just "Trump Racist." Add in most local issues are often deliberately worded in a confusing manner to pass something awful (like expanding Section 8 housing in white areas) and it becomes harder to defend letting the masses vote. But hey, if we didn't have elections why else would every politician have to suck AIPAC's dick?

I don’t think the average Israeli “hates” other people. Do they think they’re the chosen people, therefore think of themselves as above others? Yeah, whites do that too. Although whites have math, science and engineering to back themselves up on that. The people in charge more than likely do, so I guess by proxy they do. But I don’t think the average American hates Africans or middle easterners enough to murder their children like our government does, so it’s a bit of a stretch.
