When you're around long enough to entrench yourself, but not big enough to be one of the big names always recognized, you're in this strange middle ground where you have some form of power without all the notoriety. And when someone is a narcissist like Norton, your tendency to abuse it increases multifold.

This easily backfires when you have had a near mainstream career as a public figure for 25 years, are at least peripherally memorable for your heinous appearance, and could possibly become known ONLY for your crime.
