If you're not used to American Literature from that era (Melville, Hawthorne, Longfellow, etc) it can be inaccessible. The book itself is profoundly boring. The plot is great but could be condensed to 300 pages and still be considered a masterpiece.
Just read Blood Meridian instead. It's essentially the same story except they replace the white whale with America and it's only 200 pages.
