Read In the Heart of the Sea instead. It's non-fiction about the whaling ship Essex. If you dig that, then try Moby Dick.

They made a movie about it, but I can only vouch for the book.

If you're not used to American Literature from that era (Melville, Hawthorne, Longfellow, etc) it can be inaccessible. The book itself is profoundly boring. The plot is great but could be condensed to 300 pages and still be considered a masterpiece.

Just read Blood Meridian instead. It's essentially the same story except they replace the white whale with America and it's only 200 pages.

It was, but only because I viewed it as a challenge. I went up north to a cabin for 2-3 weeks and just read it during one of the coldest god damn winters. No internet, no tv. It was probably the last time I was actually at real peace. No idea if the book had anything to do with that.
