It would have been funny if he had been kept in the dark, and served papers to an oblivious Canyon. The Canyon Boykin thing was too perfect a present to be wrapped up for Rick. As he said to Josiah, he has Rahul and Canyon's identifications, he didn't care about the lawsuit at that point. How many nights did he imagine his big day in court, the brave victimized hero versus the racist police officer who killed a black guy at a traffic stop. All the attention and sympathy from the jury as they all take his side, every last juror validating that he's a good boy. We're both public figures, this trial could get national media attention, then the entire world can validate that I AM THE BESTEST BOY!
He was in control. He was telling anybody who'd listen, tweeting Canyon facts, spending frivolously, "your life is coming to an end, stlaker". But it was all an elaborate reverse-catfish, a con too good to be true, and plenty of stupid fat Midwesterners fall for internet ruses every day. Instead of exploiting your hopeless romantic side, pretending to be a beautiful lonely girl, they pretended to be your perfect strawman villain.
I guess it's good Canyon didn't get financially wrapped up in this at all, but man those legal briefs would have been something. Canyon's lawyers denying everything and Pat's submitting evidence of illegally obtained screenshots as "proof".
