I'd say it's a UK thing as we say we are 6 foot, drive in miles, weigh ourselves in stones and drink pints of beer and milk in a utterly confusing fashion but the date format is bizarre and weight I am guessing is kilos so it's some European thing I guess.

Tradition. It's been used since biblical times for all weights and then eventually it became what it is today over the centuries. It's only used for body weight really now though. Back in the 1700s a stone was different depending on what type of goods or location it was which really shows we have kinda cleared it up somewhat.
