Putin's putting the old USSR band back together. He's got Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan back in the CSTO; and good relations with China, North Korea, India, Vietnam, Cuba, Syria, Pakistan etc. As Trump pointed out, he's also got a stranglehold over Europe via oil and gas exports. If he gets Ukraine, he gets control of about 30% of the world's wheat supply, plus big chunks of the seed oil and iron supplies - and the ability to drive up food prices all over, including the US. US farmers will sell to the highest bidder, they aren't going to give a discount to their countrymen, so it'll hit us too. Worse, Putin gets to dump that excess profits from that into his military, and use it to take over the next country, and then the next. He's already conscripting guys in the Donbas, meaning his army's got more soldiers than if he'd been kicked out of there when he first invaded.

So, we've got two choices. We can either stop him now, or we do what our grandparents did and ignore it until he sets up a nuclear missile base in Cuba, again. The "stopping him now" option is just the cheapest of the two. Stopping him when he invaded the Donbas would have been even cheaper, but we missed that one.
