How is Compound Media still in business?

Because despite what the fags on here say, it doesn’t take that many subs to keep a hobby afloat. $6,000 per month rent, $10,000 per month employee pay and you’re looking at 2000 subs to break even. That’s not including people renting the studio and the VFW hall comedy shows.

The “failure” of Compound Media is greatly exaggerated as it enters nearly a decade on the air.
How many full time employees? Part time? Hiring people like Artie? Apps and website? The billboards? The NYC studio? Equipment? Travel? I would be shocked if Anthony had broken even for all of Compound Media combined. He could not even afford Legion of Skanks and a bunch of other shows that walked off of Compound. He also begged Opie to return offering him 50% of Compound Media which was ridiculous. Offering Opie half of Compound Media was a massive indicator that he was financially hurting.

I would guess that Anthony had to scale down Compound Media heavily to get it to break even or make a profit. But in the long term I don't really see it being successful enough to survive once Anthony retires or dies. Almost no hardcore O&A fans even care about Anthony anymore.

Low IQ people make fun of opie's career first. Opie isn't sending audition tapes out, he's fucking around on yt for his own ego, low effort and makes a couple hundred from soccer moms. For free. He saved his money and continues to be frugal with parking. People on here seethe because Opie out-jews the parking jew. Opie wasn't buying toy dinosaurs and guns he isn't allowed to own anymore.

Meanwhile Anthony dumps untold amounts of money so he can do a HALF A SHOW and have simulated friends. His network is an excuse for a social life. Think of all those expenses... utility bills, server upkeep, the website, equipment fixes (after a Brennan stampede) file storage, hosting, renting the space, And for what? All that to do a HALF a SHOW. A fucking HALF A SHOW. Hosted by a Half A Fag.

Sadly this is true. Things definitely could have changed by now but I remember just a couple of years ago, Keith the Retard accidentally enabled the view count for the on-demand section. Nana’s show alone was getting 2,000-4,000 views, and just from the recorded archive. The live viewers could easily make up more than double that number. This was also after Gavin had left. I’m sure he had a hefty contract but Gavin also has a huge following.

And not to mention people who still pay but never check their credit card statements and forget to cancel.

The CP Media YouTube channel also indicates that a decent number of people still follow Nana religiously. 20-200k views per video. I’m sure a good amount of those people have a sub.

Stomping on the bit here but wouldn’t shock me if Nana comes out with a net positive and by a large sum as well. We really underestimate how many boomer truckers actually pay for a Childporn Media sub just to hear black crime statistics every day.

At its peak, CM was probably running around breakeven.

In 2022 there is no way that is true, though if /r/tacn is any indication the network has picked up a fair amount of MAGA right wing grifter fans to replace the original subscribers looking for actual comedy

There is zero chance Anthony keeps the NYC studio once he moves south. He's been slowly shedding costs through attrition and there's almost nothing left there anyway. I'm expecting some form of deal where GAS, Gavin, etc offer to pick up whatever shows are left when Ant shuts the place down.
When do you think their peak was? I saw their numbers at the end of 2016 and they were very… not good.

Then right after that about 1/3rd of their subscribers left for reasons. It was so bad that Maresca started doing some weird shit to their accounts processing that it was very difficult to unsubscribe.

At the time Compound was in Debt to Cumia, Maresca and a few other people for about $800 grand. Anthony sometimes puts money in to increase his stake %, other times he loans it to the company.

Probably in the very beginning peaking around when LOS and Gavin left and the O&A base turned on Anthony. Probably another bump for Artie until people realized that show sucked.

If CM was doing well:

1) Keith wouldn't have left. (And we still don't know what happened there)

2) They wouldn't have axed low cost shows (ESD/Taleeb) seemingly for no reason other than to save money

3) The wouldn't be hemorrhaging talent. They have lost half their lineup of content since Keith left with nothing in the way of replacement shows.

Everything about the network in the last 2-3 years has been in the direction of lowering the cost footprint.

The obvious next step in that regard is to lose the studio and half their producers when Nana moves south.

Keith was incompetent and the only reason he was able to stay on so long because he was a share holder. Then his incompetencies started pissing the talent off. Compound lost a couple important shows mainly because of him and others were ready to walk so the Count had to finally cash him out. I think he still owes the Marescas quite a bit.

Thanks for all the great comments, I cracked up reading several of them. Ribs etc.

Not to be mean but I’m going to assume people who think CM might be even one light year away from profitability haven’t been involved in running media companies (or ran them into the ground).

My guess is that Anthony thought he could create YouTube for comedy buffs and drunks/druggies. Except there’s already a YouTube for them and his only point of differentiation is that there are no progressive pieces of shit on CM (AFAIAA). As someone else noted, the Trump era brought them more of the MAGA/incel/fuck-the-establishment crowd. But there are plenty of NEETs in every cohort they “specialize” in, it’s not like having a subscriber base of DINK faggots.

Anthony was at least smart enough to understand he needed a grownup to run the business. Keith struggled to make it a success but it would have been even more of a shitshow without him. The basic shit they couldn’t get right was hilariously embarrassing. GAS came along and had actual producers and other support staff for hosts, plus the money was significantly more than what CM could swing. Luis and the guys could at least stay sober long enough to develop commercial relationships with sponsors.

The only people who stayed are those who didn’t get any other offers. Some of them might be savvy enough to generate additional income from fans (e.g. through Patreon, Locals, YouTube superchats, etc.). I’m not super familiar with all the dregs who are still left, but I’m guessing none of them have cultivated a loyal audience that’s so invested in parasocial relationships that they’ll hand over an extra $XX,XXX per month. (You can hate on WATP all you want, and I am legitimately disgusted by them for multiple reasons, but it’s not fraud if people get a kick out of giving you money. It’s not like they’re targeting the elderly or anything, just perpetually online losers.)

But Bill “My Brand Is I’m a Fuckup” Shultz, for example, would be living at Port Authority and panhandling outside the studio if Anthony got rid of him. Thanks to his fellow addict boss enabling his destructive MO, the rock bottom he has needed to hit for a decade-plus has been delayed at least five years. I’m shocked he’s still there, but I guess when your boss forgives every shitty thing you do — not showing up, getting in fistfights, having gay sex at work, stealing from your cohosts, etc. — you can coast a while.

Say what you will about Keith, but the sad, hilarious fact is that he was only adult in the office. With him now gone, shit seems to have declined at a precipitous rate.

It really does look, as others have commented, like CM is just Anthony paying to have a social life. He and most of his pals can’t function in any “career” that doesn’t allow them to day drink Monday through Sunday. He’s aware that this is the best most of them will do unless they get their lives together, and he knows they won’t. Maybe his life as the little brother trying to play peacemaker between two degenerate addict parents (and a retarded older brother and dingbat sister) means he’s comfortable enabling any gutter-dwelling friend he has.

But the money’s almost gone, unless he won the lottery or cashed out millions in crypto at the right time. (Joe would have bragged about that if so.) Their only assets are cameras and tech equipment. He can’t auction those to keep the lights on because then he won’t have any content.

I hate myself for having thought and written this much about it, but I’m frankly astonished CM is still going.

And the sad thing is that Keith in all of his incompetence was *still* better than whatever the fuck erock does and/or Nana trying to run things by himself.

Gavin could have run the place. Luis could have run the place. Aaron at least tried to run the standup shows. But Nana didn't want to give any of them enough stake to stick around.

And on top of everything else you have Nana being so terrified of being cancelled that he refuses to use platforms that would actually give him so reach. (All so he can scream nonstop about n*****s when he his hopped up on booze and xanax- not because of anything he is willing to say on the show)

I don't think it's a cancellation thing. I think he genuinely fears being recognized as a failure, and public platforms will prove nobody gives a fuck about him anymore.

Low twitter count? "Well that's just because they keep banning me!" His live appearances are either as a supporting act or in front of 12 people? "Well... Antifa keeps fucking with us when we do them!" Live at the Compound was a YouTube show -or at least was re-upped over there enough- to prove he likely wouldn't have been le cancelled for his gimmick. At least he'd be up long enough to drum up the fanbase to then follow him behind the paywall.

There's no way he didn't realize he was likely going to eat shit on a solo venture, and wanted to be able to lie about it. Remember how CP was "making him more money than he ever did with satellite!"?

Please be joking
infuriating.
we dont want to believe we are so wrong about a podcast's financial situation

these folks dont even bother to get to a studio, its all Zoom shows making fun of shutting john

thats why i think CP is actually making money since the hangeron is getting 10k/month, but then Anth has his own apps/studio/full time employees, all uncesscrity expense if you ask me

I don't listen, but does he have a lot of ads?
I don’t listen either. Just had some dealings back in the day. If they don’t have lucrative ads it’s not because they’re too edgy but because nobody there has the most basic business development interpersonal skills.

Anyone who’s ever had to rent broadcast studio, control room and post-production facilities — in the heart of midtown Manhattan, no less — knows their overheads must be eye-watering. Ad hoc rental for facilities like theirs are around $3000 per 10-hour day; there are definitely some savings at a monthly rate, but rent alone is running them five figures. That’s before you even hire technical people to run shit. Remember most of the overhead is boring but compulsory:
  • Rent
  • Server costs
  • Website maintenance costs
  • Subscription management
  • Insurance
  • Accountant(s)
  • Lawyer(s)
  • A/V equipment (huge up-front costs for cameras, lighting, cables, etc.)
  • Post-production equipment (ditto)
  • Software licenses (tech, editing, financial and otherwise)
  • Interest
  • Alcohol
That’s before you’ve hired a single technician, producer, camerafag or assistant. The “talent” is legitimately their lowest overhead cost, I’d bet. Their monthly churn must be astronomical for an operation that is mostly executed at the most amateur level. Profitability is a pipe dream and I suspect break-even is too.

yeah its all Zoom shows very low effort
Not joking when I say CM would be better and make more money if they just organized a series of Zoom calls, shared them for free, and came up with exclusive perks for those who throw money at them every month. People are so used to Zoom and UGC that the professional setup isn’t giving them any kind of edge, just more overhead and problems.
