They went to a Mexican market that contains a taqueria. Mercados are everywhere from mid-CA south, especially in LA. East coast equivalent would be a bodega, though I dunno if those sell hot food as a rule.

It's not necessary but many do, for example the originator of the chopped cheese sandwich in Harlem is a bodega

delis and bodegas are interchangeable terms in NYC by this point, they're all run by Yeminis, and they all serve hot food. A lot are getting into the weed biz now too.

I’ll never understand how a bodega is any different than a normal 7/11. All the gas stations in the “hood” nearest to me sell pastalitos and other hot food.

Most delis make all manner of hot and cold sandwiches. Everything from burgers, to hoagies, to cuban tortas. Nothing against gas station food. There's a gas station in my hometown with some of the best fried chicken you'll ever hope to try in your life
