Years ago I helped my friend move to Anchorage for his first big job after finishing his degree. His whole life was crammed into a Volvo SUV towing a small trailer, with just enough space for us to fit in the front seats.
We were humming along through one of the most isolated parts of B.C. Canada at 2 a.m. when the car starts sputtering and dies. We didn't know it at the time, but the gas gauge was totally off and the MPG was awful due to the weight of the trailer. After feeling despair for awhile, eventually some Hoser getting off work drove by and offered to take my friend to the nearest gas station, maybe 25 miles away. So off my friend goes, into the night with some stranger, not even knowing if gas is the issue because the gauge still says 1/3 full. Anyway, they return oddly quick based on having to drive there & back and we fill up with the gas can. My friend confirms the guy drove like a lunatic, but was friendly.
It ruined the potentially enjoyable trip because we had to spaz about gas every two hours; the stations are few & far between in the more remote areas. So yeah, plan accordingly when you drive through Canada and thank you random Canadian kid.
