I think a lot of woke people see pure laughter as low-class and beneath them. It conjures up an image of some dumb redneck 9 beers deep, hysterically laughing at farts and nut shots. HUHUHUHUHUH HE GOT KICKED IN THE BALLZ!

The concept of an "intellectual" is not a man who has uncontrollable fits of laughter. It's some guy in a silk robe, sitting in front of a fireplace sipping brandy, having a witty chuckle if he hears something humorous.
I remember reading about the class system in Britain and how middle class people would try to ape the aristocratic elite, but they'd have no real idea how to do it so they would just play pretend as something they imagined was cultured. They ended up creating their own little pretentious subculture that contrasted heavily with upper class understatedness, which was closer to how the average Joe talked and behaved.

Pat is a good example of that. His whole attitude and manner of writing is so forced and awkward, and so very clearly the result of him trying to emulate his pre-conceived notion of how an 'intellectual' acts. So he spends his days calling people child on Twittet and pretending to be an expert on everything, when any genuine intellectuals would've done the exact opposite.

He says things about how you shouldn't try to be snarky around him because he'll outdo you, then proceeds to make awkward unfunny comments. He used to say you shouldn't go up against a comic like him for the same reasons, as if he'll deliver a hilarious witty retort to embarrass you.

However, he's never said anything remotely clever or (intentionally) funny. It's painful to read what he considers to be funny jokes in these exchanges and elsewhere. He said whiskey is an aide to his writing, and you can tell. It's all confidence with nothing to back it. It doesn't help that his neck seems to have merged with his many chins to become something truly horrible.
