Most people who ride the metro are dirt poor, and once they can afford a personal vehicle they're right along with everyone else sitting in traffic. First off, it isn't 40 bucks, and to an extent I wish train travel was more common here. However in Europe a Honda civic costs 60 grand and gas is 12 dollars a gallon. People have alternate modes of transportation because you have to out of necessity
