My immediate response was "eww, we don't do that here" but thought it was too early to start being a prick.

Anyway, does the sentiment bother you?

It does make me cringe a little bit and I dislike the American style worship of the armed forces, to me it's just a job and no one made you join the army.

As a Limey, it's completely alien. I admire it sometimes, and our soldiers are treated like shit by the government, but they always were, going back to the the Empire. The "heroes of Rorke's Drift" almost to a man died drunk, homeless and penniless, forced to sell their V.Cs for chump change, so it's kind of understood going in. The Armed Forces in Britain is a job for a) people with a family history of service b) those who can't get any other job or c) psychos who want to see what it's like to legally kill people.
