It’s tiered payouts, you have to be in the remaining x amount of payers to be in the money, the higher you get the more you make. He paid in a buy in and was out before making it in the money (which is generally slightly higher than the initial buy in)

I’m sure people do make a living playing poker but it’s not common. Definitely less now as the poker boom is over. It’s hard to beat the rake consistently, let alone make enough to pay rent. I’d wager that most of the pros make the bulk of their money from endorsements.
