It's just not something that ever happens in those circles. The idea is that if someone can get into a meeting then there is a chance, however small, that it might take and they could turn it around. And that shouldn't be discouraged. I'd imagine it's the same idea in a gym. Rick writes this stereotypical brototype straight out of an 80s high school movie, the exact kinda guy that would knock Rick's fat ass out if he tried that shit with him. He's fat. And an alcoholic.
