Prince was not only a musical genius but also could get away with being a dick because he thought it was hilarious.
Weird Al said he was invited to one of the Grammy awards in the late 80s and they obviously assign where all the artists sit. Weird Al got a letter from Prince’s people that Prince would be sitting in his row and nobody in that row is allowed to look at Prince. Weird Al and others in that row actually avoided looking at Prince because they were told. To be able to get away with that kind of messing with people is legendary.
Another time Dave Grohl was contacted by Prince’s people to schedule some time for the two of them to work together on music and to meet him and NOT BE LATE. Dave was shitting himself with anxiety and showed up to the address about an hour early to not piss Prince off. Of course once he went into the studio nobody was there and Prince never showed up or reached out to him again. Dave was confused about this situation and then a couple months later he’s watching Prince at the Super Bowl and out of nowhere he starts to cover Foo Fighters “Best of You” which just fucked with his head even more. Now THATS funny.
Another I’ll have to look up involved an SNL after party and Fred Aremsin. Fred went up to talk to him and Prince told him he couldn’t talk because he was too busy enjoying a bowl of Mac & Cheese.

Completely agree. Even when he was in his later years, "The Gold Experience" came out in 1994 but it sounds like it could have been released last week. He certainly lost his ability to craft unique/exciting songs in his final years, but he was still crushing live performances to the day he dropped. He just ran out of creative juice after 30 something years of being an innovator.
My favorite one was the Kevin Smith story. Prince had Kevin waiting up on the phone for hours, had him fly out to work on a movie for free, and then never released it. Kevin worked for free on father's day, ignoring his wife and kids because Prince asked him to. And it never went anywhere.
There is an endless supply of Prince stories, because he was hardcore autistic sperg in his own right. He was trolling just because he could, didn't even care if anyone was in on the joke with him. His insanity was everything the media wishes Kanye West was.
Not only was his music excellent, but A LOT of it was funny as fuck too. He did an album called GOLDNIGGA where he let his backup band play the lead, and he played a white redneck who hated niggers. "We oughta put a big white sign at the front door that says NO BLACK MOTHERFUCKERS in this house."
The dilemma with Prince was he went through so many different eras. He was always primarily a Funk musician but he changed more than Bowie. Prince had like 4 versions of every song he ever wrote, in 4 different styles and genres. And he would play every single instrument on the song. He made every single noise recorded on every track, except for orchestra samples.
I only just became a Prince sperg within the past 5 years or so. There is no justice for him in any documentary or mainstream tributes, all they do is mention Purple Rain and all the obvious shit. Prince's time in the public eye is a rabbit hole unto itself. He was responsible for the introduction of the "PARENTAL ADVISORY EXPLICIT LYRICS" labels on album covers due to his sexual lyrics. Later in life he was driven so insane by this that he actually tried to alter the master tapes to Clean versions.
And that's not even getting into the aforementioned Vault that still has fully produced films, live concerts, songs, AND music videos for those songs that nobody has never heard or seen. His estate has been releasing them slowly over the past few years, and nearly every single one of them could have been gigantic hits if he did release them. His career was plagued with odd choices, but being a Prince fan is all about accepting the fact that he was a contrarian sperg.

His live covers of songs were almost always better than the original. Even if you didn't like his albums, his live performances were always an event.

I'm old as fuck, and I was one of those kids in the 80s who got into arguments about Prince being better than Michael Jackson. It wasn't just a Chris Rock bit, junior high kids seriously argued about it.
I think "talented dickhead" sums it up pretty well.

I'm too lazy to find it, but there were occasional nights when Prince played eight hits and did two encores. Just wasn't the night that I happened to see them. But that kinda bugs me too; if I'm going to blow $1000 on concert tickets, $200 at the bar, $800 on plane flights and $500 at the hotel, it would be nice to hear Prince actually play his own damn music.
I didn't spend $2500 to hear Prince cover Beyonce.
I think "talented dickhead" sums it up pretty well.

- I wanted to see Prince for 20+ years but couldn't afford it. His shows were REALLY expensive. I finally said "fuck it" when he hosted his own venue at the Rio in Las Vegas. Tickets for the show were about $1000 for me and my GF. Prince played seven songs I'd never heard of, closed out the set with "Purple Rain", walked off the stage and didn't do any encores. Zero interaction with the crowd.
- Years later, I gave him another chance. By then, tickets were $1200 for me and my GF. I damn near walked out of the club. The ridiculous cost of entry seemed to bring the Millionaire Douchebag contingent out in force, and the crowd just had a bad vibe. He was a little bit more engaging that time around, but once again he only played a single song that I recognized.
- The only time that he did a show that consisted mostly of his hits was when he did Coachella. From what I read, he was paid an absolutely ridiculous amount of money. Basically the people running Coachella didn't want him doing a set of songs nobody had ever heard of, so he made them pay dearly for it.
But as a fan? Yeah, it's frustrating.

I can 100% understand why Prince did things the way he did. He didn't need the money. The only reason he did shows was because he liked to play music, and he had enough money not to give a shit about whether the fans recognized anything that he played. Prince certainly could have gone the same route as Motley Crue or KISS or the Rolling Stones and just played 30yo songs to stadiums forever. I don't think he was money hungry enough to justify that, and I think he preferred doing small intimate venues.

He did the whole concert in the dark, Robin!!!! I yelled out TURN ON THE FUCKIN LIGHTS!!!!
Prince was known for doing multiple "after show" concerts at small dive clubs directly after live shows, just like Dice's album the day the laughter died. But this was in his prolific era, during the 80's and early 90's. That set list you posted actually made me go "ooo" like a fruit. I'd love to hear this show.
If you wanted him to play the hits, you should have attended concerts when those songs were hits. That's when he did those songs right. As I said before, towards the end he changed all his lyrics to be kid-and-family friendly.
You got unlucky and also saw him after he was creatively jaded and was running out of juice. In the early 2000's he started recycling outtakes from 1987 and updating the drum noises to sound more hip-hop modern. It actually wasn't terrible, it was just sad that he was resigned to relying on that musically.
His father's death destroyed his psyche. His HOT YOUNG girlfriendwife had not 1, but DOS miscarriages. Back to back D.O.A. dead on arrival children. Actually, one of the 2 births, the child was born with eyeballs on the outside of his face. Prince retold the story that he was so ready to be a proud father, holding up his newborn baby, only to recoil in horror at the unsightly little mutant that did not survive much longer. Love ya miss ya.
But I do like a lot of his later albums, particularly The Rainbow Children which is as organic as it gets. Musicology was a good comeback. After that, he lost me. There were a couple highlight songs in his final few years but it was mostly re-tread. I stopped checking up on his work.
Talented Dickhead is a perfectly accurate description. I phrased it more like Contrarian Aspergers. In the late 90's he was shitposting and schizoposting about religion, conspiracies, and whatnot on his website. He has some hilarious blogs on archive.org. They're mostly .txt files hosted on one of his sites.
