From what I remember from high school health class, basically HIV is the run-up to AIDS. You get fucked in the ass by a doe-eyed wanna-be biker with a guitar at the Big Apple Ranch, you get HIV, and after some years enough of your white blood cells have been wiped out and you graduate to full-fledged AIDS. Or, so I've heard.
