I don't get the issue with marrying cousins.

Isn't the chance of defect super low? And that's literally the only argument against it.

It's possible those countries don't have numbahs that fit the parameters of this study. It's not like the government keeps a ledger of incest, it's something that needs to be researched in any country, and for some the picture will undoutedly be incomplete. I don't think it's surprising that more research has been done on the effect of incestual relationships in the Middle-East, where cousin fucking is a cultural norm, than in Easterm Europe, where the subject isn't as much of an issue.
