About as good as it gets for me. 2 hours from London and Manchester and can buy a stunning huge home in the villages dotted around for 1 and a half million. I have a place near it. Apart from the occasional sailing trip around the Scottish Isles and walking holidays in the Highlands, I've never really ventured further north than Oxford. London's bad enough these days, I can't imagine how awful cities up North must be. Best to stick to the English countryside if you have to go there. Demographically it's still similar to the 1950s.

I was born and grew up in London and lived there pretty much exclusively till my late 20s. It used to be a great city. It's too overcrowded now and has weirdly lost a lot of its energy and "personality." In 10-20 years it will just be a small number of super rich living there for a month or two a year and everyone else will be underclass and working poor. Maybe 1 in 20 of the people I knew growing up still live there. Everyone else has fucked off to other parts of the UK, the States, Europe or the Middle East.

Personally i find the North to be a better place to live than down South. For example, York & Richmond are beautiful places to live. York is probably the most beautiful and quintessentially English city in the entire country. The only places down South that look nice are in the South West like Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Cornwall etc. Excluding Portsmouth & Plymouth of course.
