He was pretty regularly the funniest guy in the room even when great comics were in. Not to mention way funnier than Artie who is the only one with a comparable job title to him.
He also funnier than he seemed because Norton and the comics would fake laugh at a lot of Anthony and Opie's jokes. Also Anthony was funny when his references were not ancient. Not to many 20-year-olds are going to get his 1960s movie quotes. Artie was also hilarious on Stern for years until the heroin destroyed him.

You listen to O&A from like 2009-2014 and you can hear Norton fake laugh at a lot of Anthony's jokes and Anthony laugh at Norton's jokes. Opie once said during O&J something like "have fun trying to make Chip work without Anthony around". Because those two fags were not around to punch each other's joke up.

Anthony was definitely one of the funniest people who ever lived. But his refusal to learn anything new doomed him into obscurity once his original audience walked away. Without his human laugh track Norton there for him he is just embarrassing. Anthony's show is like those shit tier sitcoms where people remove the laugh track from the show and put them on YouTube with how awkward it is.

Ant had better rapport with the comics than Jim. That means a lot since Ant was a mere civilian whose never been knee deep in the trenches of The Cellar shoulder to shoulder with straight mur-durrr-hurrs. Jim even had a seat at The Table. That's right, the Cellar Table! They don't give seats at the Table to just anyone. Bob Kelly even has two.

You just roll the coffin nowadays. It’s more symbolic than anything. I can empathize with a lot of Anthony’s feelings avoidance techniques but you really can’t turn down being a pall bearer. It’s like saying you won’t stand up in a wedding.

I mean you’re not really breaking new ground with the fake laughing thing. They all laughed too much for the most part. Are you accusing me of falling for the laugh tracks in sitcoms too?

How the fuck would a middle aged alcoholic who at that point was already 30+ years into his habit be able to learn new tricks? Nana now doesn't possess the ability to update his 2 shirt wardrobe let alone form any new references. Those new brain synapse circuits are very costly to generate, especially when you've been in a sustained drunken stupor for 4 decades now, brother.

Yeah, he’s disgusting but I don’t want to rewrite history. At his peak I don’t think there was anyone quicker or funnier on radio. But this is where Opie comes in. He always teed up excellent topics for Jimmy and Anthony to talk about. He knew What Anthony would hit out of the park and he presented it to them and let them have Addit. There’s a reason why these two aren’t even funny anymore when they get together. It’s undeniable at this point, Opie had something to do with their success on the radio no matter how many people want to deny it. He set the framework, he set the structure, and it mattered.

But no matter how much I hate him now, it’s undeniable how funny Anthony was at his peak.
