It makes sense why he seems to get along more with Robert - He wants to steer clear of whatever bullshit from James and Lars.
Like many groups I feel like Hetfield / Ulrich see themselves as Lennon / McCartney and the other members try to stay out of their way. Example - The Eagles Don Henley and Glenn Frey. Those two made it very clear it’s their band and the other guys are employees and if you don’t like it they can replace you and nobody will notice like they did with Don Felder. He wrote Hotel California so it pisses off Henley to this day he has to still pay him since that’s their biggest song. Also see Gene Simmons / Paul Stanley - other two guys just stay outta their way and don’t raise their voice.

I’d cry too if I had to sit through that mess. I heard Lou was a real dick to Kirk during the making of that album. Something like he told him to stop his “flamenco shit” guitar playing. That album was so bad it makes St Anger tolerable - which at least now the band jokes about it being shit. James trolls the audience with “here’s a song from you favorite album” before playing anything from St Anger.
