I love most of his films but after watching Moonrise Kingdom (which I thought was kind of shit) I’m concerned he might be a pedophile.
The ones I found funniest are:
  1. Rushmore
  2. The Royal Tenenbaums
  3. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Least funny:

  1. The Darjeeling Limited
  2. Hotel Chevalier
  3. The Grand Budapest Hotel

Queerest film school dogshit:
  1. Hotel Chevalier

I don’t know enough about film to really comment or critique with any kind of knowledge. But I’ll say this, I enjoyed 1, 2 and 3 on your list but felt weird about those movies.

Like when you watch movies that are funny or interesting, but even while watching you feel like there’s something subversive or disturbing about it but can’t put your finger on it.

I get the same feeling when looking at a painting or an art installation that is impressive or beautiful or impactful but you know it came from the mind of someone who clearly has issues. There’s a disturbing undercurrent.

I feel the exact same way and I never would've been able to put it into words.

There’s only a couple I haven’t seen but on the whole I fawkin’ love the guy.

Someone up above said something about a “dark undercurrent” in his films. Well yeah. Underneath all the affectations and stylistic choices almost everything he’s ever done is character-based and focused on heavily damaged, flawed people.

It’s all just dressed up in cool music and impeccable sets but loneliness, isolation, suicide, death, self-centered narcissism, obsession - these are recurrent themes in almost every film.

Even something like fantastic mr fox Is about a flawed and broken father-son relationship.

I always thought he's what J.D Salinger would've been if he'd been born a few decades later and directed films instead of writing books. Started strong and got lost in his own whimsical universe.

Spot on. Thanks for articulating what i wasn’t able to. Also thanks for the shoutout to Fantastic Mr Fox. Big fan of the Roald Dahl and stop motion.

I’m a romantic so i really love Moonrise Kingdom. I’m a sucker for that kinda shit. But i love most of his movies.
WWAW “really loving” kids touching each others genitals on camera for money? I get what you mean though, he hits the spot for romanticism in a very unrealistic but interesting way.

I've enjoyed quite a few of his movies (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, Darjeeling Limited, Budapest Hotel. Royal Tenembaums). But I've also disliked/hated a few as well (Moonrise Kingdom, Isle of Dogs, The French Dispatch). I think he is a bit hacky and repeats a lot of the same old gimmicks that he gets praise for.
