Heard a lot about this movie over the last few days, and successfully convinced the wife to catch a late screening of it last night.
I enjoyed The Witch ( I'm not a Reddit faggot, so I am not doing the double v bullshit) but didn't catch The Lighthouse, so I didn't really have any expectations going in.
Beautiful lush photography and visuals - should definitely be seen on the big screen. Very grim and absent of humor and levity, which makes it appropriate for it's period and content. Reversal of a lot of Hamlet tropes as well. Makes me wish that we would have gotten the Mel directed Berserker with Leonardo DiCaprio, as Mel excels at directing period pieces ( Apocalypto is phenomenal).
Says a lot that the younger people in the theater who were fucking applauding the Dr Strange trailer were stunned into silence by the ending, and were all but groaning. People today can't take a movie that doesn't have the comedic sidekick, quips or pop culture references, it seems.
Not saying that it's perfect - it's not. But it was a welcome antidote to the juvenile bullshit that is currently polluting theaters today.
What say you, bruthamen?
