Agreed. I always like to say marathon runners are trying to outpace their own demons. If you speak to them for just a short while, you learn they're never at peace, and usually haven't dealt with or looked at some manner of trauma.
My Gen X closet case cousin used to run long distance, until he had a coronary event and almost died on a dirt track halfway up a mountain. Now he's got a pacemaker and he's not even 50. I do think the bearding is making him as stressed as the over-exercising, though.
Running ultras is a sign that you can't handle your own emotions and you seek to tire yourself out so completely that you won't be bothered by them at the end of the day when you are by yourself with no distractions.
