Working at home versus working in the office

My company stopped it completely in 2022 - I didn’t leave because I have 10 years seniority and the benefits is too good to walk away from.

I worked from home last week for a sanctioned one off period (I had to be online at stupid times to monitor server handovers and back up testing etc) and I couldn’t believe how much better it is.

Working from home feels like a lucrative side hobby, working in the office feels like a giant unending existential horror.

What industries still offer it besides non job government shit? It always seems to be confined to entry level stuff or top end c suite stuff when I look.

I work for a government contractor and Im still WFH five days per week

It’s really the only place that still does it, government shit.

I’m not a mean spirited person, I don’t want to prevent others doing it just because I can’t like boomers. I’m happy for anyone who gets to do it, it’s without a shadow of a doubt a much better life.

Yeah idk what people have against it. The pandemic proved that it doesn’t matter where people do their email jobs. I guess boomers just like playing dress up and lording over their serfs

There’s different ways of looking at it, I can tell you that it can and does harm some companies to allow it, it all depends on the culture and what the services being sold are.

Also, if it works good they will quickly realise they can just fire everybody and get Indians to do it for a tenth of the cost.

I'm in the I.T. industry and periodically work from home and it's apparently pissing some of my co-workers off since they aren't allowed, and I'm definetly with them. My sister works investigations for disability at an insurance company and she's 100% remote. She put all her shit in storage years ago and now just lives in an RV and travels everywhere. She doesn't even really have a permanent address anymore.

I fucking hate going to work and would do anything to have a work from home job that at this point.

I'm sick of coworkers.
Man your coworkers piss ME off. I used to work in a plant with absolute fucking retards and dirtballs. It's the same vibe as being in jail, stuck around a bunch of idiot losers you can't stand, being forced into stupid conversations. But you also have to try to get these idiots to do their fucking job and lose your shit as little as possible. It's my hell. By the end (when I just walked out with no explanation and never came back) I was screaming at people every day because you just can't drill working into these useless fucks' heads no matter what. There was also a high turnover rate so pretty much every week there's one or two brand new retards you have to suffer.

I've barely ever raised my voice at anyone on any other job.

I have a friend who does this, he has big city wages but lives great in rural nowhere.

I suspect it will probably be clamped down more and more.

Businesses don’t exist to provide jobs and good ones, they exist to make money to shareholders and as soon as there’s a down trend they’ll go after the remote workers. Plus, if you can work from home and it works, they will always come to the logical conclusion they can just pay an Indian nothing to do it remotely - I’ve seen it happen a LOT personally over the last two years.

If you work in software, there are endless fully remote jobs. I will never EVER not have a fully remote job again. The location independence and time saved every day driving to-from work is priceless.

You have to be very good or very useful to do this and not just be replaced by someone in the Philippines.

It might not be apparent yet to some bubbles, but it will eventually. Imo anyway

It really depends on what level you are and what job you have. Some days I need to find something to do when in the office if there isn't a project I'm actively working on, so there's really no reason for me to be sitting around on-site. I also live nearby my job so it only takes me 15 minutes to be on-site if I need to. The reason more of the office employees aren't remote at my job is because someone was caught in a spot where they needed to jump into a meeting last minute but couldn't because they were at the grocery store so I kinda get why some places are really against remote work. I get a little more leeway because I'm on-call 24/7 outside of "office" hours.

My sister is upper level at her job so people would need to go through several pajeets before getting to her, but most of her job involves research and essentially atalking people online in a lot of cases. She actually took a pay cut to be fully remote like she is. All she needs is a phone and an Internet connection to do her job.

I can work remotely when I’m on call like that, it’s unreasonable to expect me to drive 30 minutes to the office at 3am if the network goes down when I can just turn my laptop on in bed.

You’d think people would understand this and respect it, but they don’t and use it as a grievance why they can’t work remotely themselves in normal hours. Mostly boomers or women.

Well, aren't you? People have been saying since the 90s that the software jobs are going overseas. The reality is that the few 3rd worlders who can actually do a white man's job just figure out a way to get a visa, then move to the USA where they can get a white man's salary. The only people who need to worry about their jobs moving overseas are the thots who do spreadsheets

It depends, I can work remotely if I wanted to - but could I do it at a reputable company, based in a good location, at the salary I make now, with the security I have in attending in person now? I don’t know. I’m good at what I do and I’m reliable, but I’m not a superstar programmer or anything and never will be. I’m a safe pair of hands that anyone can come and visit in my office and that’s how I get the salary I get.

I might be undervaluing myself but I don’t know, it seems risky and I’m a cautious person.

You also know as well as I do, most of this shit will be AI soon, how many people are at the level that they are immune to it, truly? Not many

Corporate propaganda. These companies have hella money locked up in their physical workspaces that they’ve been shown are obsolete. Rather than cutting off the expense they’d rather continue to use it and make everyone go to the office (makes sense if they’re locked into a contract and can’t just leave the building)

Also micromanagement. Can’t watch your employees 24/7 in their glass offices if they work from home. Working from home also means they could get another online job at the same time - Big no no. You are a slave to one company only and having you in the office 24/7 means you can’t do anything else but the work you’re already doing.

Also yes 100% serf shit.

That’s true but I can assure you, through being the stasi police on the other end, that it does destroy some workplaces and some people literally do nothing.

You’re assuming most people are basically reasonable and trade the better work life balance to produce better work, but lots will quite literally do nothing and act like the company is a charity for their livelihood.

100%. It was a chick who really ruined it with the whole grocery shopping shit, but the head of administration at my office (boomer) complains it's not fair to others that I can be remote. Idk, maybe change careers then, fuckface.
