Why remove something that works perfectly fine to replace it with something that is absolute dog shit? "Upgrade"? More like downgrade. Do they not understand the definition of the word?
What was the thought process behind it? There's no excuse. Just another example of how out-of-touch and half-baked the google chrome developers are, they take a year to roll out broken software and deactivate what worked.
IMO the real reason is to make searching and archiving images harder as they vault/demo the internet.
