I agree that he likely never actually had the job, but I think there's a possibility that he did and he backed out. He started wearing those stupid arthritis gloves and consistently whining about losing his voice and having to drink hot sauce and eat Lay's chips because some other cover band fag told him to. He could've realized that cruises suck and he would be treated like a nigger and used the gloves and fucked voice as an excuse to get out of it. "I know I committed to playing guitar and singing on a boat, but it turns out that as of a couple days ago I actually can't do either anymore. My hands. The arthritis. Ow. My voice. The potato chips. Ow. I will still gladly accept payment, but I won't be on the cruise."

I have what can only be described as a very unhealthy interest in finding out what happened with all this. I mean the man made this news a part of him. Proudly telling Anthony on his show, making it a part of his Reverb ads, etc. I really need to know what happened.

Knowing Joe, I have to assume this is probably what happened. Joe heard about this gig and imagined first-class celebrity treatment across the board, essentially a free cruise he'd be paid handsomely for. Then he learned it'd be a real job, and he quickly lost interest.

I'm sure he got the job pending a background investigation. Once they did a routine social media check that dropped him like a rock. Can you imagine the cruise ship bookers see his People Court appearance? You guys probably helped.
