So Patrick held a "volunteer lifeguard" position, aka someone 12-15 years old that isn't old enough to get proper training, but will spend a year or so doing bitch shit so that when they turn 16, they're immediately hired. Like an internship, but with more skimming leaves out of a pool.

For obvious reasons, volunteer lifeguards aren't allowed to actually sit and "protect" the pool by themselves, because it would be a huge liability if something were to happen with an uncertified lifeguard on stand. If a volunteer lifeguard sits, they're doing so with a regular lifeguard, knowing "officially" the regular lifeguard is responsible over the pool. It actually explains a lot about Patrick's time as a "lifeguard" and his bullshit stories about what, two people dying under his watch? He was a little boy pool intern bitch, everyone hated him because he's Patrick, and they decided not to offer him a spot after his summer of free labor.
