Apparently Trump was upset because metal detectors were throttling attendance at his rally: “I don't f'ing care that they have weapons. They're not here to hurt me. Take the f'ing mag[netometer]s away." This is according to an unreliable witness who grants that Trump's concern was his crowd looked sparse on TV. Trump just vented and didn't get what he wanted.
The Capitol Building has its own security not controlled by the executive branch. The high-brow leftist speculation is Trump wanted to prevent attendees from having their weapons confiscated (???) so that they can do an armed assault on the Capitol later. He also supposedly wanted to go to the Capitol after his rally and lead his armed assault, but that didn't pan out either because his driver vetoed it. (Claims that Trump lunged at the driver appear to be exaggerations.)
I thought the story was some of the overflow from Trump's rally went to the Capitol and breached it before Trump concluded his speech. If only they were let in to attend the rally as Trump wanted!
