I try to separate the artist from the art but this has always been a tough one even though he made some fantastic movies.
Chinatown is trash. It is a mediocre attempt at some 'Godfather' type mafia film where casinos are replaced with water pipes and the mob is replaced by incestuous cowboys. The main detective is incompetent as well. The big incest twist is just there for shock value and makes no sense. Like all of the incest writing on Game of Thrones it is just there to get the audience to react.

Rosemary's Baby is only hilarious in that Mia Farrow got angry with Frank Sinatra and shaved her head just to fuck with him, so they had to write it into the movie that she got a haircut because audiences were surprised at her boy haircut. Ava Gardener reportedly once met Mia Farrow right after she shaved her head and kept staring at her haircut in disbelief. Alien came out a decade after this and perfected the whole "giving birth to a monster" premise that has now been copied a million times.

Other than those two movies what did Polanski made that was even remotely good?

The Pianist was great because it's like watching Jewish Jackass.

An Officer and A Spy is his most recent, based on a true story and it's excellent. It won a bunch of awards at European film festivals. If you don't like that kind of movie though "The Ghost Writer" is a very entertaining and well done thriller

I know it has flaws, but the movie The Ninth Gate still remains one of my favorites. I just watched it recently and I still enjoyed it.

How do you get Godfather type mafia film from Chinatown? It’s a film noir. It owes more to Raymond Chandler than anything else.

Godfather is noir as well just done in a massive epic fashion. Practically everyone in Godfather I and II dies as well which is typical of noir movies. Where the main character gets what they want but costs them their family or soul or whatever. The first noir films were pretty much all cops and robbers films just done in a more serious tone. Stuff like The Public Enemy was based on Prohibition gangsters and is a mafia film. The difference between the later gangster movies and shows like Godfather and Sopranos versus early gangster films is extremely brutal tone despite almost identical subject matter. Stuff like Sunny getting gunned down or Tracy the stripper being beaten to death could not be filmed in early noir movies.

Chinatown is about organized crime. It is about a modern group of businessmen who are cornering the water market in California and the American West. Godfather was about a group of businessmen trying to corner the legal gambling market in Nevada. Both involve murders and corrupt government officials and chase scenes and betrayals and so on. The only difference is that the ending of Godfather is way more subdued. The big action sequence (to quote Roland) is when Michael assassinates his rivals which happens near the end. The actual ending is him becoming a monster like his father and lying to his wife about killing his brother-in-law.

The ending to Chinatown is silly and comical. Like throwing Jame Cagney's lifeless corpse from the mattress on the floor for shock value. They whole incest reveal and then the ending shootout and double crosses were poorly written. The betrayals in the show The Shield were far more brutal and better written. Like how one by one members of the Strike Team were killed off and betrayed.

There are some elements of noir in Godfather in how it looks and the period, but there is more to film noir than crime and everyone dies. There’s a sense of fatalism and pessimism, usually for people on the outside looking in and being ground down by hopelessness and confronting the futility of their actions.
Godfather is more romanticism, with its emphasis on the tragic rise and fall of the people in power and the familial drama. It’s almost operatic. Chinatown’s clearly a type of hard-boiled detective story taking after stuff like The Big Sleep.

The two movies are nearly contemporary, and the screenwriter was influenced by historical water disputes and Chandler’s writing about LA, not Puzo.
