I never laughed at Letterman once. Usually if I don't find someone funny I can at least understand their appeal. But not Letterman. The only thing I can think is that he had weird segments you normally wouldn't see on television. But Letterman himself was never the entertaining part.

He used to feature cool artist and do entertaining interviews up until the 90s. Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart and Pixies were all on the show as guest or acts at one point. He was too dry for me when I was a kid watching late night tv.
