Imagine you’re an elderly woman. You have a couple of sons who are both grown up and out of the house and have their own stuff going on.
You’re sick (or sick-ish) and you’re pretty sure you don’t have many good years left so you start to take inventory of your life. You think about what you did right, what you did wrong.
You finally accept that deep down inside, you know one of your sons is a disappointment. You spent years trying to help him and nothing worked. Oh well, at least you tried, I guess. You keep it to yourself for a while.
Then one day he comes over and starts whining about God knows what. You aren’t even listening but you’re getting angrier and angrier by the second.
Finally, you tell him point blank that he is a coward and a disappointment and a goddamn disgrace.
Then you die.
That’s pretty much what happened with his mother.

Paul is one of those faggy men who are always hinting at suicide but will never do it. Having the parting words from your mother before her death being she thinks you’re a disappointment and a coward would be the final straw for any truly suicidal individual. He’s too much of a coward to even off himself. He really should be thanking God that there are people out there willing to put up with his self pitying bullshit and actually consider him a friend.
