The classic rock station is on at restaurant and it's playing "Stairway to Heaven." Do boomers actually want to hear that again?

Not New Edition? They were the r&b vocal group with all the best tunes and swagger, once they grew up and out of that annoying falsetto Candy Girl rubbish.

My Caucasian Brit father’s stint in the merchant Navy meant that he spent the late 70s-80s touring South America, soaking up all the music to bring back home and pass on to his future family.

Hence why I was the only kid in a little rural Welsh village to know about Solar records, and who could groove to Maze ‘Before I Let Go’ like a black Mamgu at a barbeque (it was clear early on I was gay as a goose), despite myself never having seen nor spoken to one single POC person until I was at least ten years old. My dad also used to screen me old episodes of Soul Train, rather than talk to me or play games with me.

All the other white children I was around thought me bizarre, because all their parents knew of, liked and listened to was white driving rock, folk and prog, or Britpop (I mean we had Catatonia and the Phonics records playing in the house too, but)

And later in life when our house finally got capability and money for satellite tv, my younger sister also had a short teenage phase of obsessively watching BET and trying to copy their fashion styles or their silly slang. I never went that far or got into it, I just really like classic chart dance and r&b music and that’s all.

It’s a shame how over half those major artists have turned out to be either industry plants or predators. The same is true of white rock, though. Time wounds all heels.

So your dad fucked you up by making you a pariah. Okay, I can see why you're a bit "miffed" at him.

I heard Nirvana on the oldies station next to the Fleetwood Mac and ACDC. I can imagine Cobain spinning in his grave over that

70s 80s 90s seems to be the current definition of “classic” rock. I’ve noticed Alice In Chains gets played more than Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Consensus seems to be they were the best grunge band, so radio has decided they have to play “Man in a Box” and “Heaven Beside You” over and over again until we hate them.

They were moreso overplaying Pearl Jam in the decade before that (2000s). I couldn't switch on Scuzz for half a day, any day of the week, without the video for Jeremy or Even Flow popping up at least once or twice.

Raven the wrestler basing half his late 90s WCW gimmick on Pearl Jam songs and attire probably didn't help matters, either. "Some must diiiiiiie so that others can liiiiiiiive"

My parents being into classic rock is actually one of my biggest resentments. I'm sure there's worse problems to have lol. But I have zero knowledge of old soul music and stuff that would make me fit in with black people.
My middle name comes from a classic rock musician my mom has a super unhealthy obsession with. I don't think my doxxing got that far. I'll never tell.
I had the opposite musical upbringing. My mother's boyfriend loved black music - even jive talked w all the brothers he'd get high with, calling them "blood" and saying "what it look like" without irony. Crazy shit was they thought he was cool! I used to know all the lyrics to this in 4th grade because he'd play it all the time.
