A lot of the show was really corny and hacky.
There's also tons of downright amateur level directing and editing. In this scene, they cut from the guy just standing to shooting all of a sudden. They couldn't have him pull it out, or at least show the victims reacting to it, to make it more dynamic and intense? Then the sound cuts out for the rest of the scene.

Actors usually just spit the food out between takes.
Plus that's no excuse. Aj and Meadow eat normally in most of their scenes. Dumb Edie Falco ALWAYS pokes her food, swishing around the food or is clearly fake chewing. It's beyond distracting.
Also there is that one scene where Tony is eating melted icecream for some reason. What they can't afford one more scoop?! ADD ANOTHER SCOOP!! Sopranos is the worst show.
