Because the audience is conditioned to assume Howard is the bad guy (rich, handsome, arrogant) and Kim and Jimmy are the underdog protagonists. Howard of course transforms to the sympathetic figure (going thru divorce, reputation being smeared, wrong place wrong time murder, etc) and Jimmy is revealed to be the bad guy.

Many of the plot lines did seem contrived. Not sure I buy Kim going along with such an elaborate plot to screw Howard. It was pretty evil.
