If you look up ancient paintings and statues of Romans, they looked pretty much like they do today, at least in Sicily and Southern Italy. The statues of many of the Roman Emperors make you think "I've seen Italian guys that look just like that..." Northern Italy definitely did have a lot of interbreeding with the Germans and Gauls though, that's why so many look very white and blonde.
