I really think he’s lived his entire life ignoring reality. Even after he lost he went silent for a bit but after a day or two was back to ignoring reality. It’s how he handles every failure in his life as it didn’t happen or it’s not his fault. From his failed marriage to this as long as he says “Wrong Child” he believes it. In his mind he’s perfect has never done wrong and just succeeds at everything. It shows how deeply mentally ill he is and might explain the Niki being his caregiver / government benefit since it sounds like he is unable to function in society.

At this point that "marriage" is for tax benefits. I cant imagine her thinking too highly of him after the case. He was already banished to the couch. He would only cook for himself 99% of the time. We all know he pretends reality isnt happening but how can she? How can she take this Costa Rica trip knowing they just took on some huge debt and still have a good time? To celebrate their anniversary. She would be better off using that money to serve him divorce papers.
