I didnt catch that angle but it does make sense. He is totally one to try and lock her in with him being in her life forever. Pat would try to solve his marital issues by getting her pregnant. Not to disagree that he wouldn't want to make her a hostage, but the loathsome way he uses child as insult makes me think he would have regretted that play if it worked when she walked out and he had to pay support after 5 years.
