Question about the Frankenstein and Dracula novels

Not bad

Is it true that Frankenstein is considered worthy of deep literary analysis while Dracula is viewed more as shlock entertainment? In the movies, these stories have kind of gotten the same type of treatment, but the ambitions of the authors were very different as I understand it. Mary Shelley - highly respected in academic circles but Bram Stoker - Stan Lee of the 19th century? I might be wrong.

General consensus is that Bram was a hack. His day job was as a theater manager. He wrote The Lair Of The White Worm which is frequently listed in lists of the worst books of all time.
How much is Mary Shelly's reputation bolstered by faggy academics just because she's female?

She hung out with Lord Byron and was married to Percy Bysshe Shelley, who are both respected 'real' authors. I wonder if that raised her credibility. I haven't even fawkin read the book, but I doubt I could analyze it even if I had.

Frankenstein is still taught and analyzed mainly bc it's one of the earliest gothic novels AND it's written by a woman (but many scholars think her famous writer husband wrote it)

Google Books has it for free. The AI voice is clunky at points, but it's a decent "read."

Frankenstein, Mary Wollstonecraft (Godwin) Shelley.

Frankenstein is a thoughtful exploration of humanity and the amorality of the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake with primitive science fiction window-dressing. Mary Reilly is probably the best film adaptation of the monster character.
Dracula is a cheesy bodice-ripper written back when even the worst hack authors had a good command of English. Just about any Dracula film is more interesting than the book.
