Fact of the matter is, Howard will always be the godfather. At the point where he was officially the highest paid entertainer in America... if you were in the radio industry, you should be paying attention to what he was doing. Opie's Eye was on THE COMPETITION.

There was never a point where Opie tried to sound like Howard Stern, but Anthony did for a few years in the beginning.

If anything, Opie will never admit he was heavily influenced by Ron Diaz of the legendary Ron & Ron. If you've heard any limited material from Ron & Ron been released, it's amazing how Diaz behaves and talks just as Opie would years later. The show with Diaz, Bennington and Fez as third mic was a lot like O&A with Norton.

Opie admits he used to trade radio tapes from Tampa to hear Ron & Ron, which is why he was familiar with Ron & Fez when they arrived at WNEW. This is called being a student of the game, who doesn't dropout of school to smoke pot. Opie actually pursued a career in a chosen field, and put in the work. Long before Howard was even known locally anywhere. By the time O&A started establishing themselves, Diaz left the picture.

Meanwhile... Anthony was a huge Stern fanboy, and didn't admit it until after he left O&A...

Why does Opie hashtag Joe Rogan's name in some of his videos? Because Joe Rogan is currently America's highest paid entertainer. Opie's Eye is Always Open.💲👁

“Howard fawwwkin listens to us. I know that for a fact.”
-Opie circa 2005 in the Jim Phillips attack. I hate Opie the least but he had delusions when it came to Howard beyond having an eye on the competition. Case in point Opie harassing Howard in the SXM hallways and thinking he’s legitimate competition. Howie couldn’t give a fawwwwwk about the boys in terms of fame or listeners. The only time he got pissed at them was when they would attack his kids, wife, or just him. Beyond that the “feud” wasn’t a thing.

I should kill myself for what i’m about to say, but Sam Roberts made a good point when Jimmy and him were bickering in like 2017-18 where Jimmy questioned why Opie kept taking little shots. Sam said that it’s because he comes from an old school radio mentality of RAGING against the maaaaaahn and having an enemy. 2 years into the SXM merger Opie even pondered on air that they hadn’t fought Howard because there was no reason, being that Howard was in the same building. And to an extent it obviously works with the fact we all only watch Ope when he’s talking about others.

The Joe Rogan shit tracks with the mentality i just described. Opie is trying to pick a battle because he thinks it will get him attention but it won’t. Howard and O&A were at least reasonably in the same universe…Radio, shock jocks, some of the biggest / notorious, rabid fans, etc. Rogan and Opie are not in the same universe. Opie is 10 years removed from O&A. 5 years removed from a serious career and doing streams on youtube with vegetables. Rogan has the biggest podcast, a comedy club, multi millions of dollars, talks to celebrities everyday or some of the biggest comics in the world. Rogan has no need to mention Opie beyond when he says O&A on the 4 years occasion he has Anthony on. While Opie may be the least degenerate and hatable he is the least relevant of the three.

Howard stole parody songs and phrases like balloon knot from O&A all the time.

And Opie did a lot for Rogan, and Rogan names him as an influence. Of course he is relevant to Rogan. Podcasting is radio.

Howard definitely did talk about and fuck with them behind the scenes. It's clear that Hoohoo was enough of a vindictive ghoul to monitor and sabotage the competition, no matter how small.

I never knew opie listened to old ron & ron tapes. It makes complete sense.
WOW was a rip off of Let the puppies breathe and Opie definitely had a Ron Diaz type of hosting style especially when it came to callers.

In the end O&A ripping on Stern's daughter was pretty much the biggest victory from either camp because Stern was rumored to have basically lost his mind over the incident. Lots of people think the real reason O&A were fire is because of this one event where they recorded Stern's daughter during her jew play screaming 'My vagina!!'. People can argue that Howard survived while O&A died. But more people probably listen to O&A clips on YouTube than listen to Stern live now (especially considering he only broadcasts once a month at this point). And while O&A and J all hate each other, things are not great for Stern either. As everyone seems to loathe Stern. Pretty much both shows had huge falling out moments with various staff members including suicides. So neither show looks particularly great.

Stern drove away essentially two generations of his show. He let Billy West and Jackie Martling walk over pennies. Then had his show implode with Artie a decade later. Only to then lose the entire HowardTV staff and fire his longtime people like Scott the Engineer. Massive fights with various people Crazy Cabbie or Stuttering John and so on. Scott Salem was rumored to be fired because he wanted to plug his wife's cancer benefit and Howard forbid it and then had him terminated. Ben Sparks (loser who was fired from O&A) and Chauncey Hayden (Stern fan and tabloid writer) both created a story to frame Opie's wife as having a sex tape with Bam Margera which became a big point of contention on the show. But Stern actually had Crazy Cabbie break into his studio and film sex scenes and make a real porno without asking permission. Howard reportedly replaced every single piece of furniture and microphone in the studio.

Anyways, Scott the Engineer had been working for Howard since forever. I remember him working with Stern in the late 80s and all throughout the 90s. He was always getting his balls busted over various production issues but had some big moments like the wire cutting incident, baking the tapes, driving off with cash in the roof of his car once, bowling a perfect game, and entertaining the idea of taking a gay porn star's cock anally on a PPV event for $250K. He was as big as Sam or Erock on Stern.

A few years ago his wife gets cancer all over. Surgeries and chemo. She is bedridden from brain damage from the chemo and needs a full time nurse. Sirius's insurance contractor does not cover the full time nurse. Scott empties his entire life's savings to care for his wife and goes bankrupt. He begs Howard off air to be able to plug his benefit for his wife. Howard says "no". Scott then goes to Marci Turk, a hugely hated Stern assistant, and says that is there any other way to help. Marci warns him not to do the benefit publicly and not to use Howard's name nor use the name 'Scott the Engineer'. Scott holds a benefit online for 'Scott Salem' and does not mention Stern at all. Stern fans and others raise the money for him but rumor goes around Sirius and the entertainment world that Howard was a piece of shit to Scott. Howard then has Scott fired from the Stern Show and fired from Sirius after 30+ years of service.

Steve C was also treated bad by O&A and had a massive falling out and ended up hanging himself. But the rumors going around him was that his wife was having an affair. And he killed himself on their wedding anniversary. And it had nothing to do with O&A.

Damn, I never noticed how much Opie did Diaz. I haven't heard a ton of Ron and Ron, but as soon I read that, I could hear it.

Kinda bizarre how close it is, actually.

80s to early 90s era Stern was untouchable. Some of the greatest radio ever. OnA were the best right after that era but nowhere near as good. Stern fucking is terrible now, he's tried to rewrite history and has become super woke. Plus like others have said he broadcasts once a month.
Not to mention he still is afraid of COVID and never leaves his house.
