Modern vs older music (digitally made rulebreaker version)

I was listening to a digital track by Aphex Twin (Ageispolis) & contemplating how it compares with more modern EDM, I realised how much character the artist had imparted onto the track despite the electronic nature, I started having a jam along & things weren't fitting - I just thought that was because of my amateurish playing...

Anyhow, in the 2nd video some guy recreates the track & explains some stuff & where the rules where broken & character applied, it's some interesting DAW recreation stuff anyway.
Oooh, bonus: Video 3 is someone recreating via original method on 90s era MIDI tech.
It's the sample used for Die Antword - Ugly Boy, which is not a bad track & the video watch pretty gud, & full of celebs in case you're that kinda person.

The track:

How it was recreated on modern DAW:

Recreation on OG MIDI:

EDIT: they all say 'watch on youtube' for me. Nice thread, stupid. Video 2 is the most relevant to the title topic.

Producing electronic music had come along way by the time Aphex Twin was recording, but it was still a high bar for entry compared to nowadays where you just pirate a DAW and a load of plugins that you don't even need to learn properly.

Add to that RDJ being a once in a generation sort of talent, plus being naturally gifted in a sense with synesthesia. Devin Townsend also suffers from this and its obvious with how complex and layered his music is. He's crafted a totally unique and unmistakable sound and, while I'm not a huge fan of his work, he is a totally unique force in music.

A few other breakcore/EDM artists of the same period managed to maintain a distinct character despite having a fairly wide range, but still not to the same degree as Aphex Twin. Autechre and Venetian Snares are both similar in this regard, I think.

That album rules. Best song on it for sure. Definitely in the regular rotation when we'd ride around getting baked in high school. Most of the songs were nice and mellow and then there'd be a real ominous creepy sounding track that would change the mood. People would be like "What the hell is this?"

Producing with hardware is so much more fun than a DAW. WWAWD modular synths?
