The first trilogy was the prototype which set the foundations for all other manbaby franchises. Bad guys have an underlying Nazi theme to them, Vader is wearing an SS helmet to hammer the point home. Cram things into the movie for the sole purpose of selling toys later. But the true form of what you're talking about starts with the prequels. That was just 100% nostalgia driven with the sole purpose to make a shit ton of money. Then Disney got involved in Marvel and Star Wars and turned those into a plague which has ruined the movie industry.
