I say this with as much sympathy as I can scrape for a decaying, woman-abusing noncey closet-case:

He'd have been happier never meeting Opie, as Opie represented both everything Anthony never could be and everything he never could have.

Not to mention, as much love as Opie once had for Anthony, on Opie's end it could never be more than intensely platonic, and that wasn't enough for Ant, hence why all the vain attempts to create distance or emnity. Ant's been telling himself for decades that he doesn't need or want Opie, to take the sting out of the fact he very much did and does.
