Is the movie ‘Heaven Gate’ as bad as they say?

I’m not going to watch it, with it almost being 4 hours long, but… is really that bad of a movie?

The clips of it look cool and I guess the remastered version have a re coloring of it?

I guess this is the movie that ended the 70’s era (Days of Thunder ruined the 80’s).

Anyway, thoughts?

Michael Cimino swept the Oscars with The Deer Hunter. Then he was given total creative control on his next project. It was Heaven's Gate. He didn't work again for 5 years and his career never really recovered.

There are like 4 or 5 versions, or cuts. But, yeah. It's not good.

I always heard that it was reevaluated and that it's actually good.

It has a Criterion release, it can't be that bad

Pink Flamingos has a Criterion release. So did fucking Armageddon on DVD. They run about par every few releases and then mulligan it when they pick a piece of shit like The Doom Generation.

@Nigger John, Heavens Gate is dry. Dry like an old British twat. It doesn't matter what cut you even watch - there's better ones, but they're so. Fucking. Tedious.

Watch "Alligator" instead.

Whu bout Heavens Gate the fighting game by Atlus for PS1.

Criterions got some famous stinkers. (admittedly I haven't seen them).

The only benefit of Armageddon, still one of their worst picks, is that it has the best commentary ever: Affleck is annoying drunk cunt to Michael Bay the entire time, asking questions that point holes in the logic of the whole film.

Their Dr. No laserdisc is infamous for having a commentary track that pissed the Broccoli's off so much, that they now have very strict requirements for any video releases.

Pink Flamingos was influential though. That's historically relevant, John Waters is iconic and influential.

I just read the Criterion reasons behind including Armageddon and it says something about Michal Bay being a master of "razzle-dazzle" and chaotic cinematography, which isn't untrue. The Safdies are two of the most acclaimed directors working today and both admitted they love Michael Bay movies and his cinematography, so i can see why they included it, not to mention Armageddon's impressive CGI.

It would be hilarious if schlock like godzilla 1998 and Independence Day were on their too though.

i'd rather break my so-far 13h intermittent semen retention before i watch a boring 4h movie.

There's nothing wrong with a four hour movie, IF it's interesting.

Ben Hur is good. So is Gone With The Wind. Lots of the old long epics hold up. Even Zack Snyder's Justice League I unironically enjoy because it's different from usual cape shit.

None of those are boring.

Heavens Gate felt like being back in school.

Wasn’t the only reason The Rock and Armageddon got Criterions is because Michael Bay was a film student of the lady that ran the CC back in the day. So, she wanted to give her student who did good a bit of a boost to pump up the numbahs. *sniff*
