Last year or so I decided to try to feed the local critters around here. With tons of articles and youtube videos on the topic I figured doing such and making a friend would be easy peasy.. not so. From the stuff I read/watched, most people were saying they will befriend you within a month or so. That was hardly the case in my experience, took almost a whole year to get this little guy to be calm and not run when I crack the back door open.

Since I started paying attention and even at times filming via a trial camera, I have seen all types of animals of which I had no idea they would come so close to my place. Hoping to see a Red squirrel someday but so far it has just been greys and a few fox.

Guten Morgan, Señor Lopez.
Mr Lopez wants to say "Guten Tag Frau Mewler!" .
It's crazy how tame they can be at parks. When I eat my lunch at the park they run up to me and I can hand feed them my Doritos! #Ruizing
Heh they are little buggers. Can you recall which species ? Everyone I talk with, who has experience with squirrels talk about being able to get close and interact a bit with them. I still have to hid behind the door and take creep shots as even my good pal here will take off like the wind..
I used to be good friends with magpies because they'd come to my back door and I'd give them bacon rinds, and on a really hot Summer day I'd leave on the sprinkler and they'd cool off in it. But they peck at the fly screen like the dumb little niggers they are so I stopped feeding them.

They also shit on my verandah tiles.
I heard from a few folks, even here, that feeding and forming a relationship with birds can be a real rewarding experience. I wouldn't mind trying to befriend the birds the come around here but I have a serious problem with them making a mess all over the place. So far the squirrels have been rather good with not shitting where they eat but not these birds. Last year I put up a bunch of deterrents. but if they worked I couldn't tell, didn't even bother with em these year. Zero tolerance for shit !

I think it's great if you can have crow friends like @aRTie02150 but magpies just come up and scab food off you. I guess the trade-off is they won't swoop you in Spring.

Hey, seagulls will be friendly to you too if you have food. Truly the homeless bums of the bird species.

That's lucky for you. I fed peanuts to our two neighborhood squirrels on a patio table and they'd leave puddles of pee and little shit nuggets on it. Now I just throw the peanuts on the grass. Edit: Never had a problem with the jays shitting on the table though.

I wish we had magpies here. They vocalize for you if they are comfortable enough. It's not the most pleasant vocals, but it's still them bonding with you.

Craig makes low tone noises when near me, but he doesn't sing a nice tune like a magpie would.

You can get that little dude to eat right out of your hand. Get a huge sack of peanuts, go sit on your porch and eat them. When you see him, chuck him a peanut. Over a long period of time bring the peanuts closer and closer. Eventually he’ll eat out of your hand.

Then you get the super fun phase where he will lose all fear and try to come inside your house.

Thanks for the suggestions, I think I will give that a shot - hopefully before winter sets in I can make a better connection. Picked up some leather gloves just encase I can get him a bit closer, I will attempt to hand feed and maybe even give a pet or two.

You think there is any thing to worry about when it comes to rabies or anything like that ? Such isn't that prevalent where I live but the thought still makes me nervous. I figure if any of the creatures had rabies here it would have to be in an earlier phase as such is rather noticeable. but who, figures there has to be a risk with everything.

I think the odds of it are low enough that if your neighborhood squirrel friend gives you rabies, you were condemned by God.

Nice ruining a special moment with Nature by taking a picture of it and reducing it to content on a shitty message board, stupid.

I've been feeding Craig and his crew for a couple years now and I just for the first witnessed one of them hunt down a lizard that walked across one of the walking paths. Pretty hilarious the way one of the crows just held on to him and shook him violently and smashed it on the ground and just started pulling it apart.

I'm sure they do it all the time, but it's the first time I've witnessed them hunt. As a kid I remember watching pigeons attack small mice on more than one occasion. You almost forget these birds are descendants of dinosaurs until you see them attack something.
