I'm constantly amazed at how successful the most mediocre comedians can be. He should be borderline homeless.
Almost none of them are successful as standup comedians. They all make money or fame elsewhere and then do standup when they are peaking to rake in as much money as possible. Look at Dane Cook or (((Louis CK))) or even Chris Rock or Eddie Murphy. The second that they became famous they abandon standup unless it can bring them a stadium tour.

Standup is not really a great form of entertainment. The production levels are low value. The jokes are often stale within a year or two because standup comedians rely heavily on topical humor or political humor. And the format does not allow for any deep psychological narrative nor emotional connection like a strong series of books or a television show or whatnot. Standup is basically designed to be 'in the moment' with no cultural influence.

The big culture comedians like Carlin or Hicks are irrelevant hacks right now. Carlin with his faggot atheism preaching about how liberalism will save the world and we need more tolerance for niggers looks pathetic in hindsight. And Hicks was a loudmouthed loser drug addict whose cultural influenced vanished after his death. Or fake death if you believe he is Alex Jones.

The fact is that standup has always been mediocre. Bobby Kelly rode the fame of Dane Cook and O&A and it has been downhill since then. He hit his peak, cashed in with some standup tours, and now is desperately clinging to fame. Even Dane Cook had his career collapse into obscurity.

To summarize. Standup comedians have no talent and are part of the lowest rung of show business. The second they can get other work they try to abandon standup and never look back.
