Joe is indeed a musician, but he is not an artist. He's a mimic, he learns songs that actual artists created and plays faithful copies of those songs. Sure, it's a talent, but there's zero "artistry" involved at all. It's essentially real-life Guitar Hero, he memorizes the notes and chords and the finger positions through sheer repetition. It's a common delusion among amateur guitar hobbyists, they think they're just a talented as real professional musicians, but they aren't.

After forty-plus years of daily guitar noodling, Joe has not advanced above playing "gigs" in the lobby of seafood restaurants or at the local Moose Lodge, which says plenty about his overall lack of talent and ambition. He's like a guy who plays softball in a Sunday morning local beer league calling himself a "ballplayer".
